On Friday, June 14th, 2024, the dedicated team of carers from FeelCare had the privilege of attending the Alzheimer’s Show at ExCeL London. This remarkable event, renowned as the UK’s largest and only dedicated dementia event, was a day filled with learning, networking, and profound experiences, especially through the highly acclaimed Virtual Dementia Tour & Training Experience.
A Day at the Alzheimer’s Show
The doors of ExCeL London opened promptly at 9:30 am, welcoming thousands of professionals, carers, and family members all committed to improving the lives of those affected by dementia. The Alzheimer’s Show is not just an event; it’s a convergence of knowledge, empathy, and innovation, showcasing the latest practices, products, and support systems from leading experts and organisations.
Our team eagerly explored the vast array of exhibitors, each offering unique insights and solutions aimed at enhancing dementia care. From innovative care products to advanced therapeutic techniques, the exhibition hall was a treasure trove of information and inspiration.
The Virtual Dementia Tour & Training Experience
The highlight of our day was undoubtedly the Virtual Dementia Tour & Training Experience. This immersive activity is designed to give participants a visceral understanding of what it’s like to live with dementia. By simulating the sensory and cognitive challenges faced by individuals with dementia, the tour offers an unparalleled perspective into their daily struggles.
Participating in the Virtual Dementia Tour was eye-opening. We experienced the disorientation, frustration, and confusion that people with dementia often endure. It was a humbling experience that deepened our empathy and reinforced our commitment to providing compassionate, patient-centred care.
The training portion of the experience was equally impactful. Guided by expert facilitators, we learned about the neurological changes occurring in the brains of those with dementia and how these changes manifest in behaviour and cognition. This comprehensive training equipped us with practical strategies to improve the quality of life for our clients living with dementia.
The Importance of Continued Learning
Attending the Alzheimer’s Show and participating in the Virtual Dementia Tour was more than just a day out of the office. It was an essential investment in our professional development and, more importantly, in the quality of care we provide. The CPD certificates we earned are a testament to our commitment to continuous learning and improvement.
For FeelCare, ensuring that our carers are well-trained and knowledgeable about the latest developments in dementia care is paramount. The insights gained from this event are already being implemented in our daily routines, enhancing the support we offer to our clients and their families.
A Community United in Care
One of the most rewarding aspects of the Alzheimer’s Show was the sense of community. We had the opportunity to network with other carers, health professionals, and experts in the field. Sharing experiences, challenges, and successes with like-minded individuals fostered a sense of camaraderie and reinforced the importance of our work.
Looking Ahead
As we left the Alzheimer’s Show, we carried with us not just new knowledge and skills, but a renewed sense of purpose. The experience underscored the critical role of empathy, understanding, and continuous education in dementia care.
FeelCare remains committed to attending events like the Alzheimer’s Show and integrating the latest research and best practices into our care model. We are excited to apply what we learned to make a tangible difference in the lives of those we care for.
The Alzheimer’s Show 2024 was an invaluable experience for our team. It reaffirmed our dedication to providing exceptional dementia care and highlighted the importance of understanding and compassion in our work. We look forward to the next opportunity to learn, grow, and enhance the lives of our clients through such enriching experiences.
